The 2010 Emerging Researchers in Ageing Conference will be held on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd October 2010, hosted by Professor Julie Byles and Associate Professor Lynne Parkinson from the Research Centre for Gender, Health and Ageing, The University of Newcastle.

The conference will be held in the Newcastle City Hall, right in the centre of town, close to restaurants and cafes - and a short walk to the beach.   The conference will provide an excellent opportunity for emerging researchers to network, share information, and gain new skills.  See below for venue and location details, maps, and a list of accommodation.

Keynote Address

The 2010 conference will feature a keynote address by Professor Gita Mishra, Professor of Life Course Epidemiology at the School of Population Health, University of Queensland.  The topic of this keynote address is New directions in ageing research: life course epidemiology and cross-cohort comparisons. 

Call for abstracts

  • Abstracts for presentations and posters are now invited from current postgraduate students working on ageing projects in any discipline. 
  • The deadline for abstract submission is the 16th July 2010. 
  • Abstracts must be no more than 300 words and must include a title, author/s name/s and academic affiliations, and an email address for contact. 
  • Abstracts should be submitted by email to abstracts2010@era.edu.au.  
  • Notification of the outcome of the abstract review process will be given by mid-August 2010.  
  • Abstracts will be published online in the ERA 2010 Conference Proceedings.

Please note that in 2010, the time allocated for each presentation will be 20 minutes, including 5 minutes for questions. 

Full papers

  • Those students whose abstracts are selected for the conference will be offered the opportunity to submit a full paper for peer review (this is not obligatory). 
  • All full papers will be published online in the ERA 2010 Conference Proceedings. 
  • One of these full papers may be selected for mentoring to publication in the Australasian Journal of Ageing, at the Editor's discretion.

Pre-conference workshops

The 2010 conference will feature three postgraduate student workshops to be held concurrently on the morning of Thursday 21st October 2010:

1.  Issues in mixed methods

Workshop leader:Dr Pat Bazeley, Research Support P/L, Bowral. Dr Bazely holds senior appointments at the University of New South Wales and at the Australian Catholic University and has served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Mixed Methods Research.

2.  Issues in quantitative research

Workshop leader:  Prof Catherine D’Este, Chair in Biostatistics, School of Medicine and Public Health, Faculty of Health, University of Newcastle.

3.  Writing and reviewing for publication

Workshop leader:A/Prof Lynne Parkinson,Faculty of Health, University of Newcastle and, Editor-in-Chief, Australasian Journal on Ageing.Professor Jeni Warburton, John Richards Chair of Rural Aged Care Research, LaTrobe University.


Please note that places are strictly limited for these workshops.  You will be asked to register your workshop preferences when you register for the conference, and places will be allocated in order of registrations.  You will be advised which workshop you have been allocated prior to the conference.

Registration is now open, and you can register for the conference online by clicking HERE

  • Full registration:   Registration fee for the two-day conference is $180 per person.  This includes conference attendance, catering as specified in the final programme and attendance at one workshop, but does not include accommodation. 
  • Earlybird registration:   Those who register prior to the 16th August, 2010 will receive a discounted registration fee of $130 per person.   
  • Student bursaries:  As in previous years, a number of bursaries will be offered to student presenters, and you will be asked to indicate on your registration form if you wish to be considered for a bursary.
